IT, networks, and cybersecurity for energy and utilities

Critical infrastructure monitored, segmented IT/OT networks, and planned recovery.

In energy, water, and sanitation, IT and control systems underpin essential services distributed across many sites, some remote. Overwan manages the infrastructure with SOC/NOC monitoring, separates IT and OT networks with network security, connects remote facilities with SD-WAN and private 5G, and maintains tested recovery plans.

Who we serve

IT challenges in the sector

Essential services

A failure can affect supply to customers and populations. Continuous monitoring and round-the-clock incident response are indispensable.

IT/OT convergence

SCADA and remote control systems connected to the corporate network open new avenues for attacks. Segmentation and access control are essential.

Remote facilities

Wind and solar farms, treatment plants, and reservoirs need reliable connections in isolated locations, with remote management.

Legacy control systems

PLCs and remote control systems that have been running for many years cannot be updated like a workstation and require compensating measures.

Targeted threats

Energy and water infrastructures are targeted by attacks with criminal and geopolitical motivations, requiring coordinated detection and response.

Regulatory obligations

Incident notification, risk management, and management accountability require organized processes and evidence.

How we help

Regulation & compliance

NIS2 / Legal Cybersecurity Regime

Energy (electricity, gas, oil, hydrogen, and district heating and cooling networks), drinking water, and wastewater are highly critical sectors under the NIS2 Directive, and waste management is among the other critical sectors. Many entities in these sectors may fall under the Legal Cybersecurity Regime (Decree-Law No. 125/2025); the framework should be assessed according to activity and size.

Electricity cybersecurity network code

Delegated Regulation (EU) 2024/1366, in force since June 13, 2024, establishes specific cybersecurity rules for cross-border electricity flows, applicable to electricity sector entities identified as high-impact or critical.

IEC 62443

The IEC 62443 series of standards is a reference for the cybersecurity of industrial automation and control systems, including concepts such as zones, conduits, and security levels.

Why Overwan

Frequently asked questions

How do you protect the OT network without stopping operations?

We start by mapping the equipment and flows, and we segment the OT network from the corporate network in phases, during agreed maintenance windows, without touching the control systems while they are running.

Do you connect facilities in isolated locations?

Yes. We use the connections available at each location (fiber, radio, 4G/5G or satellite), with redundancy when the facility requires it and centralized management.

Is my company covered by NIS2?

It depends on the activity and size. Many entities in these sectors are covered. We help with the technical framework and implementing security measures; the legal assessment should be confirmed with your advisor.

Do you provide support outside office hours?

Yes. 24x7x365 support covers nights, weekends, and holidays, with continuous monitoring and defined escalation for incidents affecting operations.
